"When the Joffrey Ballet's 'The Nutcracker' opened at the Kennedy Center, Mary Cassell and other young local ballet students became children attending an elaborate Victorian-era Christmas party. Unlike the other dancers, Mary's leather slippers didn't touch the floor. Mary, 8, who has cerebral palsy, sat in a small, old-fashioned wheelchair, wearing leg braces beneath her costume."
