What does the Province need to focus on so that its own operations are fully accessible?

Oct 23, 2018

The Province has committed to revise and significantly enhance its multi-year plan to move toward full accessibility in its own operations.

On behalf of the newly appointed Civil Service Commissioner, Ms. Charlene Paquin, the DIO is reaching out to Manitoba's disability communities to find out their priorities and perspectives.

What feedback do you wish to provide to strengthen government-wide accessibility?

The deadline to submit comments for this planning exercise is November 5, 2018. There will be ongoing opportunities to provide feedback on the Manitoba government’s accessibility measures.

Here is the letter (Word / PDF) the DIO sent out yesterday to invite input and comment:

Hello,

I am pleased to share that, in her role as the newly appointed Civil Service Commissioner,
Ms. Charlene Paquin will also serve as the Manitoba government’s first Accessibility Champion. As Civil Service Commissioner, she will use her leadership to support and celebrate accessibility awareness and training throughout the Manitoba government.

Ms. Paquin is also the new chairperson of the Manitoba Government’s Steering Committee on Accessibility. Her first priority in this role is to lead the process to update the Manitoba Government Accessibility Plan 2016-18 to the year 2021. To help identify future priorities, she has asked the Disabilities Issues Office (DIO) to reach out on her behalf to Manitoba organizations that represent or provide services to people disabled by barriers.

The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) calls on [actually it requires] the Manitoba government, and all other public sector organizations, to create and update an accessibility plan that describes the measures the organization will take to identify, prevent and remove barriers that disable people. Included among the Manitoba government’s priorities in the coming years is to provide leadership by example on the implementation of new standards established under the AMA, beginning with barrier-free employment.

We would like your comments on other priority areas the Manitoba government should consider. What feedback do you wish to provide to strengthen government-wide accessibility?
