We’ve received unofficial word that major accessibility enhancements will be made to St. Malo Park this year, with further improvements planned over the next 3 years.

As reported on the FaceBook page of the Friends of St. Malo Park:

"Guess what we've been up to? Yep, it's OFFICIAL!! Friends of the St Malo Park, backed by our provincial park have gotten the go-ahead to make St Malo Provincial Park the most accessible/inclusive park/campground in Manitoba."

BFM has been told that the park already has 4 wheel chair accessible camp sites and washrooms and will be adding Mobi-Mats to the beach this summer.

Hopes are that the beach may also be able to offer water wheel chairs this year (maybe next).

Over the next next three years, plans are for the park to also feature:

  • A trail chair
  • A winter ski chair
  • An accessible swing set and play structure
  • Accessible fishing docks
  • A second area with all access washrooms

While this promising news does not address getting to the park, it does suggests that significant strides forward will be made to the accessibility of this wonderful park that is only 40 miles from Winnipeg.

What great news, particularly if this summer’s sweltering temperatures are the new normal!
