Announcing Second Event: Accessibility in Education - A Conversation with David Lepofsky

May 13, 2017

Graduation ceremony

Details have now been finalized for the second FREE public event with leading Canadian disability advocate David Lepofsky. It will be held:

  • 8:30-11:30am (including a continental breakfast)
  • June 9, 2017
  • West Kildonan Collegiate (101 Ridgecrest Avenue)

Here's the background info.

Context:

The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) (2013) was substantially modeled on the 2005 Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Ontario and Nova Scotia (which just enacted a provincial accessibility rights act) have both recently committed to establishing specific standards for early childhood, Kindergarten to Grade 12, and post-secondary education. Manitoba educators should consider the implications for following a similar direction here.

The AMA goes well beyond physical design. In education it would include instruction, activities, transportation and technology to ensure that all students with disabilities have equitable access to all the benefits of education. What might standards in Manitoba education look like? How can educators begin preparing now?

Speaker:

David Lepofsky is a leading advocate for accessibility legislation and standards. He spearheaded efforts in Ontario, promotes AODA implementation and helped secure federal commitment for a Canadians with Disabilities Act. He chairs the AODA Alliance and the Toronto District School Board’s Special Education Advisory Committee. David is speaking at several Manitoba Access Awareness Week activities.
