The PC Position on the Accessibilty for Manitobans Act at the Great Debate

We are in support of moving as quickly as we can, I recognize that it has been slow, and needs to be speeded up.
Ian Wishart

Mr. Ian Wishart, the re-elected MLA from Portage la Prairie and Family Services Critic before the election, represented the Progressive Conservative Party at the DMV2016 Great Disability Debate held back on March 31, 2016.

Moderated the CBC's Marcy Markusa, all debate participants were given 2 minutes to answer each question and 30 seconds to offer a rebuttal. Based on the transcript from the debate, here are Mr. Ian Wishart's full comments:

Question:

Is your party committed to enforcing the act, and making sure the goals of the AMA are met by 2023, and if you don’t support AMA, how would you amend the legislation?

Answer:

Thank you, firstly, we are in support of it in 2013 as a party, and we will continue to push for it in terms of implementation. In terms of how, you have to work with those who are impacted, and the other side of it, service providers, in a timely way as possible.
We do have to do a proper process of consultation. We supported the concept of enforcement at the time, there are lots of opportunities to work with industry and those in the retail sector. Frankly, I think retailers would be wise to move as quickly as they can, it only makes a lot of sense.

We are in support of moving as quickly as we can, I recognize that it has been slow, and needs to be speeded up.

Rebuttal:

Thank you. Just a brief comment, it has been referred to, the gov’t has a history of passing acts and not moving on those. This one was is far too important to take that risk, and we as a party would move as quickly as can be done.
