NDP Leadership and Disability Issues

Jan 28, 2015

BFM and Abilities Manitoba have teamed up to ask each of the candidates for the NDP leadership to make clear statements on their positions on three key disability issues. Letters to each candidate were sent on the morning of Tuesday, January 27, 2014.

We have asked each candidate to advise us of their positions by February 4, 2015 and we will be sharing these with our members, supporters and the public on our respective websites and urging eligible voters to consider these during the leadership election process.

“The provincial government had just begun to make progress on a range of disability issues following a decade of relative neglect,” said Malinda Roberts, President of Abilities Manitoba. “But this limited progress will not make much difference for Manitobans with disabilities unless there is sustained and increased commitment by government in the years to come.”

“We were alarmed that the 2014 Throne Speech did not include any commitments to provide a better future for Manitobans with disabilities,” said Janet Forbes, a member of the Barrier-Free Manitoba Steering Committee. “This is of grave concern to our community as all three leadership candidates voted to support this speech setting out government priorities for the coming year.”
