Great News from Settlement on Human Rights Zoning Issue

May 07, 2014

Many of us have been following the story on the human rights complaint that New Directions lodged against the RM of Springfield after the municipality blocked the opening of a home for three adults with intellectual disabilities four years ago.

We are delighted to share the great news that the complaint was just settled though mediation (without the need to go to public hearings) and that people with intellectual disabilities will now be welcome to live in Springfield with choices equal to others. There are a lot more positives in this ground breaking settlement that will have significant implications for improved housing options in municipalities across Manitoba.

We are pleased to post PDFs both yesterday’s media release on the settlement from the Manitoba Human Rights Commission and Monday's coverage in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Kudos to New Directions for their leadership in taking on this critical issue.
