The ADA Turns 23 Today!

Jul 26, 2013

Happy anniversary!

This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On July 26, 1990, this landmark legislation was signed into law by Republican President George H.W. Bush. The ADA gives civil rights protections to Americans with disabilities and guarantees equal opportunity in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services and telecommunications.

This was truly landmark legislation. While we can be very proud of the many steps forward we have taken in addressing human and disabiity rights issues, Manitobans and other Canadians are still playing catch up relative to the ADA. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) passed in Ontario in 2005 represented remarkable progress. The Accessibility for Manitobans Act, though still stuck in a legislative logjam, will provide the means for our fine province to step up our game.

Our Google search of earlier today of "ADA 23"  found 598,000,000 hits so there is a lot of informartion out there. Here's a US government site on the 10 things Americans need to know about the ADA: https://www.disability.gov/home/newsroom/disability_connection_newsletter/2013/july.
