Government Releases 'Official' Response to Accessibility Council Recommendations

Apr 03, 2013

On April 2, 2013, the Disability Issues Office (DIO) released the 'official' Government of Manitoba response to the Manitoba Accessibility Advisory Council's (MAAC) recommendations for provincial accessibility-rights legislation.

The official response has minor wording changes but is substantially the same as the "White Paper" released by Minister Jennifer Howard in January 2013 (see http://www.barrierfreemb.com/whatsnew/173/189). As with the previous paper, the response states that:

The Manitoba government accepts the council's report and its key recommendaitons that accessibility legislation be enacted. It is therefore the intention of the government to introduce legislation in 2013.

Of similar importance, the official response sets out the same framework that extends well beyond MAAC's recommendations and begin to address the serious issues raised earlier by Barrier-Free Manitoba.

We invite you to download and review the 'official' response.

The next formal step that is expected is the actual intorduction of the legislation. This will likely occur in May or early June 2013.
