Heather Stefanson appointed as new Minister of Families

Aug 01, 2018

Heather Stefanson

As part of the cabinet shuffle announced minutes ago, Premier Pallister has appointed Heather Stefanson as the new Minister of Families. Ms. Stefanson had previously served as the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General. Scott Fielding, the former Minister of Families, is now the Minister of Finance.

While many details are yet to be released, we assume that Minister Stefanson will also be responsible for the landmark Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) and for its full and timely implementation.

We are hopeful that this change in the Minister responsible for the AMA provides the government with a fresh opportunity to significantly improve on the implementation efforts that have been described as slow, weak and incomplete, including the timely meeting of its own obligations, and to realize the Act’s promise of achieving major progress toward full accessibility by 2023.

We are also pleased that the new Minister (as well as the Premier) were members of the opposition back in 2013 that voted unanimously in favour of passing the AMA.
