Province finally releases terms of reference for review with date set for initial public consultation

Apr 12, 2018

The landmark Accessibiity for Manitobans Act required that the Minister responsible (Minister Scott Fielding) appoint a person to conduct a comprehensive review of the act and its implementation on December 5, 2017 (and with a similar appointment to occur every five years thereafter).

Barrier-Free Manitoba has been asking the Province for news of the appointment ever since that deadline.

The Province missed the deadline by more than one month and appointed Ms. Harvey Pruden by an order in council on January 16, 2018 (see http://www.barrierfreemb.com/whatsnew/173/412).

Yesterday, more than four months following our first request, the Province has made public the Terms of Reference for the four-year review. We are pleased to post this for your review (Word). Based on the title on the file, these were developed in March 2018.

The Province also announced yesterday that an inital public forum, apparently part of the review, has been scheduled for 8:30 to noon on June 20, 2018 in Winnipeg at the Viscount Gort. Registration details are to follow.

In conducting the review, Ms. Harvey Pruden is required to consult with the public and, in particular, with persons disabled by barriers or representatives from organizations of persons disabled by barriers. Based on this, we expect that she will be announcing a range of other consultation events.

We look forward to working closely with Ms. Harvey Pruden throughout the review. While starting on the review much later than we had expected, we have every confidence that she is committed to doing an outstanding job.

As a primer for participation in the review, we invite you to consider the report card we have prepared on government implementation of the AMA to date (Word / PDF).
