BFM Releases PILC Discussion Paper on Employment Standard Models

May 05, 2016

Man breaking out of box

With the Accessible Customer Service Standard now in force (as of November 1, 2016), the government had committed to releasing an initial discussion paper on the 2nd standard to be developed, the Accessible Employment Standard. The Minister set the terms of reference for an Accessible Employment Standard Committee (a sub-committee of the Accessibility Advisory Council) last fall and this new committee held its first meeting on November 12, 2015. (see the government's AMA website for further detail).

The information black out period that started on January 19, 2016 and the April 19, 2016 election got in the way of public reports on progress. The election also required that Barrier-Free Manitoba turn much of its attention to the Disability Matters: Vote 2016 campaign.

With the election now over, we are expecting that public attention will return to the development of the Accessible Customer Service Standard.

In preparation, Barrier-Free Manitoba retained The Public Interest Law Centre to conduct and report on a compartive review of models for disability-related employment standards elsewhere in Canada and around the world. Completed in December 2015, we are pleased to publicly release PILC's report on these models.

The report is available for download as a Word and as a PDF file.
