Ontario's Built Environment Accessibility Standards Now the Law

Following an extensive process, the last of the initial five accessibility standards to be developed in Ontario under the AODA have been established in regulation. The Accessibility Standards for the Built Environment focus on removing barriers in two areas: public spaces, and buildings. These standards have been incoporated as PART IV.1 of the Integrated Accessibility Standard.

These are distinct from planned enhancements to accessibility in buildings will happen at a later date through Ontario’s Building Code, which governs new construction and renovations in buildings.

The schedule for obligated organizations to meet these new requirements are as follow:

1. For the Government of Ontario and the Legislative Assembly, January 1, 2015.
2. For designated public sector organizations, January 1, 2016.
3. For large organizations (more than 50 employees), January 1, 2017.
4. For small organizations, January 1, 2018
